Oxford House is a Sobriety Home and is opened to anyone who is looking for a life of sobriety. The differance between our Homes and other sobriety housing is that we are self-ran and self-supportive in which compared to other housing facilities they recycle alcoholics and addicts from treatment centers. There is no time frame of leaving our homes. The only guidelines to our homes is that 1) We are democratic ran 2) We are self-supportive and 3) Any resident who drinks alcohol and uses drugs is immediatly expelled. Our first Home was opened up in 1975 in Silver Spring, Maryland and has gain fast recognition throughout the wolrd opening homes world wide for both men and women. Studies have found that 80% of the residents of Oxford House avoid relapse. Our staffing involves house members from house president all the way down to house cooridnator. As of May 2010 we currently have 1,425 homes.
I will start with I am bias toword Oxford House as I am a outreach worker. At the homes we have in Grand Rapids the residents are expected to to take responsibilty and be accounable for thier actions. They learn how to deal with problems as a group the home is theirs and is not tied to any other entity. The residents make the rules and enforce them. It is a missing link in the recovery process that gives the person in recovery time to make lifelong sober friends as they transition back into socity.

I called the main 800 number four times, and three out of the four options took me to voice mailboxes that were full. When I finally got through to someone (4th try), he was rude and basically hung up on me. These are supposedly people there to help those in need?!! I rate their phone service as horrendous!!

This was not my post. This place is a dump! There is no order or structure. People are not staying sober.

I'm currently a resident at Oxford House of Lake Michigan and have made a tremendous turn around in my life thanks to the Oxford House. It is my stepping stone to my life of sobriety and enjoy the whole freedom of life while practicing my sobriety while living in this home. I reccomend this to men and women who are looking for sobriety in thier life while still be involved in everyday living because it does give the structure of paying your bills at the house and partake in house duties. Overall I feel it has benefitted me in my life to come and I thank them for that.
