 Editor's Review

Our number one goal is to provide a safe, affordable, drug & alcohol free Home-Style atmosphere for men where they can establish a foundation of recovery in order to live a productive and meaningful life. The idea is to offer a bridge between treatment and independence. New Life promotes individual recovery by providing an environment that allows members to develop personalized recovery programs and become self-supporting. We do require all members to become actively involved in the 12-Step process. Although we do not dictate their program for staying clean and sober, we do expect each member to exhibit certain minimal actions which include attendance at 12-Step meetings (AA/NA), getting a sponsor, working the steps and getting involved in recovery related activities.

Before my son came out of rehab it was discussed at length between his counselor and me to determine the best course of action to provide him the most effective new start in order to move forward with recovery and sobriety. When Galax Life Center has men they think are truly serious to be responsible and are ready for the extremely difficult work ahead in order to live a clean and sober life they recommend certain safe and sober houses. I say "men" because as boys they made life choices to do drugs and now have to move to manhood and own those choices as well as accept the hurt and damage they caused not only themselves but their family and friends. My son came to Matthew Wood and New Life via this route. When I took my son to Matt and we had our face to face meeting the rules were very specifically stated in no uncertain terms! No less than 5 times did Matt say there is zero tolerance for relapse; further, if a man does relapse and someone in the house knows about it the rules very are clear...that person has to agree up front to oblige the policy put forth, to step forward to a manager or he will be asked to leave as well. There will be NO REFUNDS! I happen to know this has been the case before and if the person admits to other members he is using, management called and the man then admits use to the manager why the need to do a drug test, not to mention some drugs cannot be detected by a drug test kit and requires more extensive medical tests? Now if this happens on any given day or time of day and a man is asked to leave, he does so by way of his own vehicle or someone else picks him up it should be his responsibility to contact his own family to tell them exactly why he was asked to leave. If he does not do so for hours there may quite possibly in my mind be a reason for not calling sooner, red flag to me! My son has absolutely thrived under the direction and leadership of Matthew Wood, who is totally dedicated and extremely involved with his men. They all are required to actively work the 12-Step Program, and they all are involved in meetings. They have daily chores and certain other fair rules to abide but for the most part they are given the freedoms to proceed with fortitude, respect for themselves and others, this is neither a lock-down program nor a child care facility. They have house meetings, they cook meals together on occasion, are encouraged to socialize, they go to coffee houses together, they help one another. Because of the professional and personal manner Matt runs this fine orginization I too have become involved with helping all I can from my location. My son is becoming the great man I always knew he could be, he just had to be in the right circumstance and we found this with Matt's organization. Matt's genuine concern for his fellow man is unmistakable, he helps those like he to become better men with depth and soul searching healing to begin new lives. In closing, I give my son (who is my heart), Matt Wood and New Life Sober Living so much respect and love because now my heart and soul are healing and coming alive because of the support I too have received from the solid and sound communications I receive. Faithfully and truly blessed, Holt Cheatham-Price

I am online to give a special thank you to Matt Wood Owner of new life sober living. I am posting posting on this site to tell you a little bit about New Life SOBER Living. I was kicked out of a year long rehab and went back to my home town where i had relapsed. I new what the right thing to do was i just could not find any sober living house that would take me, a beat down, broke addict. I had lied cheated and manipulated every one for so long that i had nobody to trust me and no one to give me support. I heard about Matt Wood threw AA as well as NA when i was in rehab. I had not contacted him because i had no money and everywhere i called wanted money up from and could care less if i wanted to be clean they just wanted my money. So finally i realized i was going back to my old ways and needed to get somewhere i would have to meet expectations. I contacted Matt Wood and was completely honest with him about my recent relapse and how i wanted to do the right thing but i did not have the money. Matt did not want nor care about money he was worried about an addict who wanted to do the right thing as far as staying clean and getting my life on th right track. Because he was actually concerned about my well being i was completely honest about every thing he gave me a chance. Because of Matt wood i am warm i have plenty of food and a job. I have so much respect for Matt it is unreal he has a heart of gold and says so much good and leaves no room for bad he is an incredible person and i can truly say because Matt Wood gave me a chance i am on the way to having a very successful life!! Thank You Matt Wood.

First off, i am a current resident of New Life Sober Living and was your sons roommate. I do not agree with any of the "points" you tried to make! No drug test was administered because your son openly admitted to using. And if i remember correctly, he did know people in the city because he had one of his buddies come pick him up, in which he packed all his belongings into his vehicle and left. Never was he left on the streets. And upon signing the contract to enter the house, it says "There will be no refund for anyone who is asked to leave or dismissed from the house." Sorry! I highly recommend New Life Sober Living. It has greatly affected my life and is a great environment for anyone who is serious about their recovery and ready to be an active member of society. My experience at the house has been awesome. I was asked to leave around a month ago and am now back in the house after i stayed in contact with Matt Wood. These are great houses for anyone looking for a sober living home in the Asheville area and also some of the nicest!

My husband and I thought this sober living home would be a great transition after our teenage son had just completed a 30 day treatment program. I was very involved in the process from the start and made several contacts with the owner Matt Wood. We paid the $800+ fee to get him into this home, (250.00 for a deposit and 570 fee for a month in advance). We picked our son up from rehab on a wed and had him at New Life by around 6pm that evening and by friday evening @ 12:30am our son was kicked out. My husband and I were given no phone call to inform us of this and our son was sent out into the streets 2 hours from home in a city where he knew no one and had no transportation or money. Our son was accused of using but no drug test was administered. My husband and I are deeply disappointed in the ethical behavior of the owner of this establishment, Matt Wood. We were never contacted or offered any type of refund or offered to have the things he left behind at this home sent to us. We have done some investigation and apparently this is not an isolated incident with young men getting out of treatment and being asked to leave after the rent and fees have been paid. Be very careful before paying for an entire month.
